On May 18, 2008 my son John Travis Gordon "Rusty" was killed by a texting driver in Marion County, Ohio. Since his death, I have become a victim advocate hoping I will make a difference in the lives of those who currently choose to engage in distracted driving. Having lost our only child to a texting driver, I do not want to see others endure the pain and suffering that my wife, grandkids, daughter-in-law and I have gone through.
As a result "Rusty's Story" was created.
In 2011, I addressed the Ohio State Senate as a victim advocate, so they would understand the dangers of distracted driving and
pass a Texting and Driving law for the State of Ohio. In 2012, while attending a training seminar in Washington, D.C., my wife and I recorded a video for the National Department of Transportation and the National Transportation Safety Board entitled "Faces of Distraction, John T. Gordon, 35." We have also recorded a video for Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine designated for police officers. We have also received additional training from the National Safety Council pertaining to Distracted Driving.
To date, I have presented "Rusty's Story" to more than 30,000 people throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. I have presented to:
The Teen Institute State Conference at Kenyon College
2018 BWC Ohio Safety Congress, Columbus, OH
2018 Ohio Attorney General Law Enforcement Conference
Heidelberg University for the last five years
2013 Ohio State FCCLA Convention
